Last Mile Delivery

Material handling for last mile delivery requires a variety of solutions in fulfillment accuracy, rapid throughput, and handling capacity.  Tracking, inventory and process organization are critically important factors.  Facilities need to contend with an endless variety of products which must be received, picked and sorted for delivery. Final mile delivery systems must meet these demands while also being dynamic enough to handle the challenges of seasonal peaks and labor shortages. Even small improvements in the efficiency of last mile facilities can yield significant results.

Case Study: Unique/United Delivery Service (UDS) – Lombard, Illinois

Recently, a Chicago-area company that provides last-mile delivery solutions for B2B and residential customers across the Midwest. The client provides its customers real-time package tracking and reporting and same day, next day, and scheduled route solutions. Systems in Motion (SIM) has enjoyed a long partnership with this client and one of the most notable projects we accomplished was the expansion of their Lombard, Illinois facility. For this project, Conveyor Solutions and KVK, both part of the SIM family of companies, worked to add a new induction and labeling line and a dedicated small item sortation system. The induction and labeling line can handle cardboard boxes and apparel bags up to 15 inches wide by 15 inches long and 4.75 inches tall. These changes increased the number of cartons being presented to existing sorters to decrease “dead spots” which ultimately led to significantly increased throughput.
